"We hang on to our values, even if they seem at times tarnished and worn; even if, as a nation and in our own lives, we have betrayed them more often that we care to remember. What else is there to guide us? Those values are our inheritance, what makes us who we are as a people. And although we recognize that they are subject to challenge, can be poked and prodded and debunked and turned inside out by intellectuals and cultural critics, they have proven to be both surprisingly durable and surprisingly constant across classes, and races, and faiths, and generations. We can make claims on their behalf, so long as we understand that our values must be tested against fact and experience, so long as we recall that they demand deeds and not just words."

"Bad bread wrecks my outlook on life. The pathetic loaves at Seattle’s proudest French restaurant immediately made me paranoid about everything on the menu, everybody who had recommended the place in print or in person, and all the other customers. How could they sit there and smile and eat that bread-shaped impostor on the table?"

(i am if the belief that the word “bread” could also be substituted for “coffee” in this quote.)
"If you’re trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. They will look down on you anyhow. And if you’re trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. They will only envy you. Status will get you nowhere. Only an open heart will allow you to float equally between everyone."

i have a growing obsession with bookcases. leave it to erin gates to find out that juniper books does custom covers so that your bookshelves can look even more awesome. TOO COOL.
ps, i don’t think that cookbook installation has custom covers, but how sweet is it? i’d be okay with photos of marcus samuelsson and mario batali on my bookshelf.
never judge a book by its cover…unless it’s designed by coralie bickford-smith. will you please look at these? great books, beautiful covers. what a lovely combination.
